The Difference Between Ajwa Al-Aliyah and Ajwa of Al-Madinah

First: Mention of Prophetic Hadiths

Ajwa Al-Aliyah:

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"Indeed, in the Ajwa dates of Al-Aliyah taken early in the morning, there is a cure or an antidote."

Ajwa of Al-Madinah:

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"Ajwa dates are from Paradise, and they contain healing against poison."

Second: Source and Geographical Location

Ajwa Al-Aliyah:

Grown in the Al-Aliyah region, located southwest of Al-Madinah near Quba Mosque. It is one of the oldest and most renowned areas for cultivating Ajwa dates, and it is said that some of its farms date back to the time of the Prophet ﷺ.

Ajwa of Al-Madinah:

Grown in various areas within and around the city of Al-Madinah, outside the Al-Aliyah region. It is also known for its high quality, though it differs slightly in shape and flavor characteristics.

Third: Taste and Texture

Ajwa Al-Aliyah:

It has a rich and complex flavor, leaning toward balanced sweetness with a subtle, pleasant bitterness. Its texture is soft and dense—often tender yet firm—making it a favorite among lovers of premium dates.

Ajwa of Al-Madinah:

Sweeter and lighter in taste compared to Ajwa Al-Aliyah. It often has less flesh and is slightly drier, yet still maintains excellent quality compared to other date varieties.

Fourth: Appearance and Size

Ajwa Al-Aliyah:

Dark black in color with a hint of deep brown, and usually soft and velvety in texture. The date is medium to large in size, with a small pit compared to the amount of flesh.

Ajwa of Al-Madinah:

Tends to be slightly smaller in size and lighter in color, sometimes firmer in texture. Its characteristics can vary significantly from one farm to another.

Fifth: Price and Demand

Ajwa Al-Aliyah:

Considered one of the most expensive types of dates due to its rarity and unique origin. It is especially sought after as a luxurious gift or during religious occasions because of its spiritual and symbolic value.

Ajwa of Al-Madinah:

More affordable than Ajwa Al-Aliyah, yet still a premium date variety. It is commonly consumed daily by many families and is regarded as a high-quality yet economical choice.
